Delhi sits on the Macon Ridge, right where the loess ridge runs out into the Mississippi Delta. On the ridge the ground is silt loam, and it moves easy and cuts clean. A few miles east of town you are into Sharkey and Tunica clay. That is the buckshot: greasy when it is wet, brick hard when it is dry.

The ground under the middle of Delhi is a Grenada and Calhoun silt loam complex, and it lies nearly flat. Grenada drains fair, but it sits over a fragipan, a hard layer a couple of feet down. Calhoun is poorly drained. Water perches on that pan, so a lot can look dry on top and stay wet underneath.
Run a few miles off the ridge and the map changes. Sharkey and Tunica clay take over, both poorly drained and heavy. Sharkey runs about 50 percent clay at the surface and more than 70 percent below that. Water moves through it very slowly, so it cracks open in a dry August and turns to soup by February.
That split decides the dirt work here. On heavy clay a slab wants a built up pad of select fill, placed in lifts and compacted. A drive wants a shaped base with a crown, or the rock sinks and the ruts come back. On ridge silt the digging is easier, but wet silt has no grip and pumps under a loaded truck.
US-80 and LA-17 meet in the middle of Delhi, and I-20 runs right past the town. About 8 miles away at Holly Ridge, Meta is building its Richland Parish data center. Meta calls it its largest data center to date, with 7,500 skilled trade workers onsite at peak construction.
New houses, shops and drives follow work like that. They start on ground that was row crop or grown up in brush. Clearing the lot comes first, then the pad, then the drive before anything gets poured.
Gas fields still work the country around Delhi, going back to a boom in the 1940s. Buried lines are a real thing on this ground. Louisiana 811 gets the call before we dig, and the law puts that on the excavator, not the landowner. The notice goes in at least two business days before the start date.
Poverty Point Reservoir sits north of Delhi, a man-made lake of about 2,700 acres. The state park there has waterfront cabins, a marina, a swimming beach and a nature trail along Bayou Macon. Out from town, camps, hunting land and row crop ground run in every direction.
Landowners out here want water on the place. Pond construction starts with the dirt under the site. An LSU AgCenter pond publication says the soil needs about 25 percent clay or silt to seal properly. It also says to check the soil at least 2 feet below where the pond bottom will be.
The Delta clay east of Delhi holds water well, and ridge silt is a harder question. The AgCenter puts a Louisiana pond at about 4 feet of average depth, with no part under 3 feet. Past about 6 feet you gain little here. We also clean out and deepen old ponds that have silted in. Camp roads and field drives get cut in on the same ground.
The worst tornado in Louisiana history, the state's only recorded F5, struck just outside Delhi in February 1971. On one day in December 2024, tornadoes touched down at Tendal, Warden and Altoona, all near town. Laura and Delta brought tropical storm winds across Richland Parish in 2020. In January 2026, freezing rain put trees and power lines down across the parish again.
Plenty of what stands around Delhi is old, and the median house in town was built in 1973. Sheds, barns, mobile homes and whole houses get to where they have to come down. Demolition here is the excavator and the grapple, with the debris loaded and hauled to a permitted landfill. The lot gets graded after, so it drains and mows.
When wind or ice leaves a pile on the ground, we pick it up with the grapple. The truck hauls it off. Storm damaged sheds, barns and outbuildings get torn out the same way. Standing or hanging trees near a house go to a licensed arborist, and the utility handles anything on the lines. Delhi is about 45 miles from Bastrop, and we run US-425 south then I-20 east to get here.
